ISO – International Organization for Standardization
and HL7 – Health Level Seven International
have both published updated standards of the International Patient Summary (IPS).
The first is the ISO 27269 International Patient Summary
, which provides basic definitions of the IPS and its data blocks. The second is the HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) International Patient Summary Implementation Guide
. Both are 2.0 versions of the respective guides, reflecting feedback from the implementation community and best practices in achieving interoperability across borders.
Both the ISO and HL7 standards now include two new sections of clinical data. The first is the “Patient Story”, which provides the opportunity for patients to communicate what matters to them and is important to care providers. The second is the “Alerts” section, which brings the most important healthcare information to the fore to reduce the risk of missing urgent and important information. These complement the other 14 sections of the IPS, which remain in both standards from earlier editions, as shown below.
The IPS Coordinating Committee (IPSCC) works to coordinate feedback on the collection of IPS standards. If you would like to provide feedback, use the new form available here. You can still provide feedback to one of the IPS standards development organizations, but this new form provides a single location for requesting a change to an individual or multiple standards in the IPS family, as the IPSCC manages the request and communicates it to the appropriate standards development organizations.
