Looking back on 2024 – great uptake

2024 has been an eventful and exciting year for the International Patient Summary (IPS). In our first meeting in 2025, the IPS Web Editorial Team reviewed notable 2024 accomplishments.

Looking back, 2024 has been incredible. While it’s impossible to cover everything IPS-related in a single post, we’ve assembled some notable and exciting activity below. If we’ve missed something of importance, let us know and we can work to keep the IPS website up to date:

Early 2024New Zealand  announced its progress on making IPS available to every Kiwi in 2024 and hosted the “Ring of FHIR event with an IPS focus

March 2024: IPS was featured on the podcast “Coded Conversations and IPS had multiple presentations at HIMSS 2024. Dave DeBronkart (ePatientDave) also gave an interview on HIMSS TV  about how he can share his IPS through a QR code after the HIMSS presentation on IPS and patient empowerment

May 2024: Brazil published  its IPS initiative and gave a set of stupendous presentations  at the HL7 Working Group Meeting in Dallas TX. In addition, multiple vendors demoed their IPS implementation at the FHIR connectathon

Mid-Year 2024: Epic announced  its planned availability of the IPS in their May 2025 production release

June 2024: The Hajj pilgrimage successfully deployed  the IPS for select pilgrims in 2024 through the World Health Organizations Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN)  with planned expansion in future years. The Joint Initiative Council also released a discussion paper about the Future of the IPS as a Global Public Good. IPS also made multiple appearances by Rob Hausam James Agnew  and more  at FHIR DevDays. In addition, MEDITECH confirmed its planned support of IPS

July 2024New Brunswick Canada launches its first production use of the PS-CA (based on the IPS) for patients to bring their care summaries with them.

August 2024: An HL7 blog post  was published about the multiple vendors who have implemented or are implementing the IPS in Canada, the US and internationally.

September 2024: HL7 hosted its connectathon and WGM+ which included a global track with great content on IPS. In addition, the second version of the IPS FHIR Implementation Guide (IPS FHIR 2.0) went to ballot. It’s planned to be published in early 2025

October 2024: RACSEL hosted their 2024 connectathon  around the Pan-American Highway for digital health, which included IPS and testing from the IHE Gazelle platform. Travel Weekly also posted an article  about using the IPS for travel. In the meantime, the draft revision of the ISO IPS standard was accepted by all ISO Members, paving the way for a 2025 publication of the new version.

Late 2024: A webcast from IHE was hosted about IPS at the 2025 connectathon here  and a listing of IPS vendor support (those in production and announced) was posted to the IPS Website. In addition Alberta Canada launched their patient summary as well.
