HL7 International has announced the publication of the United States Patient Care Summary (US-PCS) 1.0, a significant milestone in the advancement of interoperable patient summary exchange in the United States. The publication establishes a national FHIR-based patient summary specification that aligns the U.S. healthcare ecosystem with the global International Patient Summary (IPS) framework while addressing unique U.S. clinical, regulatory, and implementation requirements.
US-PCS is designed to support care transitions and unplanned clinical encounters by providing a concise, standardized summary of a patient’s most important health information, including medications, allergies, problems, and other essential clinical data. Built on HL7 FHIR and leveraging the widely adopted US Core profiles, US-PCS offers a modern approach to patient summary exchange while maintaining continuity with the longstanding use of CDA documents in the United States.
A key feature of US-PCS is its direct alignment with the IPS. All US-PCS documents conform to the IPS specification while introducing additional constraints and guidance appropriate for U.S. implementations. This approach enables cross-border interoperability while ensuring compatibility with established U.S. healthcare standards and workflows. The specification was developed through a collaborative effort involving healthcare providers, patients, technology vendors, standards experts, and interoperability leaders across the United States. Published as an HL7 FHIR Implementation Guide, US-PCS 1.0 represents the culmination of extensive community engagement and ballot participation, providing a foundation for future innovation and implementation.
