Abstract: This systematic review examines the impact of the International Patient Summary (IPS) in healthcare based on twelve studies. Key findings highlight its value, including enhanced care quality, improved communication, and cost-effectiveness. Sufficient financial resources and adequate funding emerge as significant facilitators, while barriers such as privacy and interoperability concerns underscore the need for proactive measures. Further research is crucial to delve into specific factors influencing IPS implementation and its practical effects on healthcare, fostering a comprehensive understanding for practical adoption, and stimulating the further adoption of the IPS worldwide.
The full thesis by Djowin Schippers, Understanding the Value and Adoption of the International Patient Summary : Exploring Clinical Value, Facilitators, and Barriers, of which this systematic review is an integral part, is also published online (open access) In the thesis the findings from the systematic review are validated and enriched through a focused set of interviews with (primarily) general practitioners in the Netherlands that have long-term experience with the automated generation and use of a patient summary for GP out-of-hours services. Overall, the study validates the IPS’s value proposition and emphasizes the importance of prioritizing its practical implementation. This involves utilizing the existing value of the IPS, while taking into account the identified facilitators and barriers, and focusing on the necessary actions to boost its adoption.
